Drop 016 - Resin Applique for Furniture & Crafts

Drop 016 is a classic acanthus drop with a slightly bolder, more compact shape — perfect when you want a stronger decorative accent. It works beautifully on blanket boxes, chests of drawers, the ends of console tables, or tucked under the edge of a shelf or mantel as a decorative corbel.

Use it as a single drop as a feature on the front of a cabinet, a pair to frame a central appliqué, or line several up under the lip of a dresser or sideboard to give a modern piece that old-world furniture-maker feel.

Styling Tips

For a vintage sideboard look, paint your piece in a deep moody colour, then paint the drops in the same shade and finish with dark wax so the curves look like carved timber. On a lighter piece, try a tone-on-tone effect: paint the furniture in a soft neutral, then paint the drops a shade lighter and gently sand the high points so they blend in but still catch the eye. Once your paint and wax are dry, tap a little gilding wax in copper or silver just along the very edges of the leaves for a soft shimmer.

How to Use Your Applique

Application Instructions

Application Instructions

Here’s how to get the best finish from your applique — it’s easier than it looks, and a little care goes a long way.

  • Clean the surface: Give your piece a quick wipe so it’s free from dust, wax, or residue.
  • Lightly sand glossy finishes: If it’s shiny or high‑gloss, a gentle sand helps the glue and paint grip properly.
  • Make it flexible (optional): If you’re working on a curved surface like a pot or table edge, warm the applique in hot water or gently with a heat gun — it’ll become pliable enough to create a slight bend.
  • Glue and secure: Add a little wood glue or strong craft adhesive to the back, press it into place, and hold it with masking tape while it dries so it doesn’t shift.
  • Paint: Once it’s set, paint with your chosen colour — Annie Sloan Chalk Paint or Fusion Mineral Paints both give that beautiful, soft matte finish.
  • Add detail: Brush a touch of gilding wax or dark wax over the raised areas to bring out the design’s depth and character.
  • Seal: Finish with clear wax or a gentle topcoat to protect your work and give it that lovely, finished feel.

These appliques are wonderfully versatile — perfect for furniture, mirrors, terracotta pots, or cabinetry.

FAQ

FAQ

Can I paint straight over the applique?
Yes, absolutely. Once it’s glued and dry, you can paint right over it using chalk, mineral, or acrylic paint — whatever suits your project best.

What glue works best?
A good wood glue or strong craft adhesive will do the trick. If you’re working on something that might live outdoors, go for a waterproof option.

Can I trim or reshape it?
You can! Resin appliques can be gently trimmed with a craft knife or fine saw before painting. Just take your time and work carefully.

Can I bend it for curved surfaces?
Yes — if you’re working on a pot, curved drawer front, or table edge, warm the applique in hot water or gently with a heat gun. It’ll soften and become pliable enough to create a slight bend that fits beautifully.

Do I need to seal it?
If your piece will be handled often or exposed to moisture, sealing with wax or a matte topcoat helps keep it looking beautiful for longer.

Is it okay for outdoor use?
Yes — just make sure it’s sealed properly and protected from direct weather. A little care goes a long way.
