The Clever Little Trick That Transforms a Boring Drawer
The Secret: Using Appliqués as Drawer Knob Backplates
So many beautiful old pieces come through my workshop with one tiny problem: the drawers. They’re often flat, plain, or marked with old handle holes that don’t suit the new style you’re dreaming of. And if you’ve ever tried filling holes on a curved drawer front, you’ll know it’s not always as simple as it sounds.
This is exactly why I started creating my own furniture appliqués — pieces that aren’t just decorative, but genuinely useful. They’re fully drillable, sandable, and designed to become part of your makeover rather than something that sits awkwardly on top.
There’s one design in particular that has become my go‑to solution for transforming a plain drawer and hiding old hardware holes in one easy step.
A Furniture Appliqué That Doubles as a Drawer Knob Backplate
This little appliqué is one of my favourites because it does two things beautifully:
-
It adds instant detail to a flat or boring drawer
-
It covers old handle holes without needing filler or sanding
Once your knob is drilled through the centre, it looks completely intentional — like the drawer was always meant to look this way. It’s such a simple trick, but it makes the biggest difference to the overall finish of a piece.

Why This Works So Well
-
Old furniture often has unusual handle spacing
-
Filling holes on curved or detailed drawers can be tricky
-
Plain drawers need something to break up the flatness
-
A decorative backplate makes even a simple knob look special
-
It creates a cohesive, designer-style finish with very little effort
It’s one of those small touches that elevates a piece from “nice” to “beautiful”.
How to Use an Appliqué as a Drawer Backplate
You don’t need any special tools — just the basics you already have.
-
Choose your appliqué Look for one with a clear centre point for drilling.
-
Lightly sand the back This helps the glue grip properly.
-
Glue it onto your drawer front Wood glue or a strong craft adhesive works perfectly.
-
Drill through the centre Go slowly — the appliqué is designed to be drillable.
-
Paint everything together This is where the magic happens. The appliqué blends seamlessly into the drawer.
-
Add your knob Suddenly the drawer has character, charm, and a beautifully finished look.
A Real Example From My Workshop
Here’s the exact appliqué I used on a pair of grey-painted drawers recently. The drawers were lovely, but they needed a little softness — and the old handle holes were in the wrong spot. Once the appliqués were glued, drilled, and painted, the whole piece lifted. The drawers suddenly had that gentle, French-inspired detail that makes a makeover feel complete.

A Final Thought
Furniture makeovers don’t always need to be big or complicated. Sometimes it’s the tiny details — the ones you add with intention — that make a piece feel special. If you’ve got a drawer that’s looking a bit plain, or an old handle hole that’s driving you mad, this little appliqué trick might be exactly what you need.
